Schuylkill County was officially established as a county in 1811. From mills to coal mining to America’s oldest breweries, Schuylkill County has been home to a great deal of industrial and economic growth.
Orwigsburg was the first organized community in Schuylkill County and served as the county seat for about 30 years until the county seat was moved to Pottsville in the 1840s.
In 1790, miners found anthracite near present-day Pottsville. Anthracite is a highly efficient form of coal. In 1795, a local blacksmith known as Whetstone discovered uses for anthracite in blacksmithing and this became a major industry in Schuylkill County through the 19th and 20th centuries.
In 1829, D.G. Yuengling & Sons established a brewery in Pottsville that is still in operation today. The Yuengling Brewery is currently the oldest operating brewery in the United States.
Schuylkill County decreased its use of coal and has seen become a major producer of renewable energy. The county now relies on wind and solar power for at least 25% of its electrical production.
Notable people from Schuylkill County include John E. Jones III, a former U.S. federal judge, and Jude Wanniski, an editor and economic advisor for Ronald Reagan. Schuylkill County was also home to a training camp in Deer Lake, where Muhammad Ali trained.
